Dazzling Rainbow of Facebook Supporters

I just went down the list of Facebook friends to see how many have turned their profile photos “rainbow” in support of the Supreme Court’s ruling on marriage equality for all 50 states. I was pleasantly surprised to see how many have–people I expected to see, and people I didn’t expect to see.

I know there are many more who aren’t weighing in (in a visual/social media way) because of the fear that they might alienate customers, clients, family members or whomever, so I know that the exact number of happy people far exceeds the rainbow faces I see, but I’m sooooo happy to see how many are publicly endorsing the ruling.  Fully 60% of the U.S. population agrees that marriage equality should be the law of the land (as it is now, as of June 26), so I don’t see how standing up and “cheering” in this way is a huge risk. In fact, it seems to me that sitting this one out is riskier!

But that’s just me.  I like transparency. I like to know who I’m dealing with.  I can make better decisions this way.

Scores of Christians’ faces have gone “rainbow” this week, which blows the lie out of the water that Christians are intolerant haters.  Certain factions (The Westboro Baptist Church, Franklin Graham, Mike Huckabee, and some others) are raising a mighty ruckus but, for the most part, Christians are a tolerant lot and believe that all Americans ought to be able to marry the person they love. (If that’s a surprise to you, you’ve been misled by the media. What else is new?)

This has been my happiest week in a long time. ACA upheld. Marriage Equality made the law of the land. Confederate flag coming down. Little by little, we’re becoming a more perfect union.  As long as the public stays involved in the political process and keeps demanding better, we’re bound to move forward… to progress… to survive and thrive.

Next step: de-fund wars, stop giving subsidies to corporations that are raking in billions of dollars, and start funding higher minimum wages, infrastructure, education, and other things that support American citizens’ needs instead of oligarchs’ insatiable greed.
