You Can Go Home Again

 

After the DeForest Kelley Q & A Facebook gathering on Saturday, June 11th (the 17th anniversary of his passing), I decided to break out the remastered STAR TREK DVDs that Anne Richardson sent me years ago to watch “a couple” of my favorite episodes that featured Dr. McCoy prominently.

 

Ahem. A couple.  Just a couple…

 

I was still watching at midnight. So I went to bed. The next morning I started watching again. I sat there for 16 hours (except for bathroom breaks and dinner) gorging on additional episodes and watching the behind-the-scenes footage that came with some of the DVDs.

 

Frankly, I had forgotten the wonderful writing that went into that series. As a now-professional writer myself, I was floored by the scripts and the way the actors, set designers, lighting techs and others turned them into masterpieces that remain profoundly relevant  even today.

 

The remastered versions make the planets, ships and galaxies look every bit as contemporary as recently-filmed TV episodes. There is no more antique look to the sets. And high definition has given the actors faces an extra-special touch, so  they look very much alive on the other side of a crystal-clear window…

 

Now I plan to Trek Out every weekend (perhaps a bit less intensively) until I’ve gone through all 79 episodes and all of the special features that accompany them.

 

Talk about a Trekker Treat.  I am rediscovering Star Trek and loving it every bit as much as I did the first time around when I was a teenager.

 

You CAN go home again, as long as “home” is the Starship Enterprise!
